Why KLM’s Food is the Worst of Any Airline I’ve Used

When booking a KLM flight for your upcoming travels, consider packing a selection of delightful snacks to tide you over. Based on my own encounters and the shared sentiments of many fellow passengers, KLM’s in-flight dining options can leave much to be desired, ranking among the less impressive in the aviation sector. Below, I’ll share some insights into the reasons behind KLM’s culinary shortcomings, as well as practical advice on how to mitigate this potential inconvenience.

Reasons why KLM’s food so bad

First of all, KLM’s food is bland, boring, and repetitive. According to Thrillist, KLM ranks 29th out of 32 airlines in terms of food quality, and is described as “a sad, sad place”. The same meals are served over and over again, with little variety or creativity. For example, on a long-haul flight from Amsterdam to New York, you can expect to get a cold sandwich, a pasta salad, and a dry cake for lunch, and a chicken curry, rice, and a fruit salad for dinner. And that’s it. No snacks, no drinks, no extras. Just the same old food that you’ve seen a hundred times before.

Secondly, KLM’s food is unhealthy, unappetizing, and unsatisfying. Many travelers have complained about the small portions, the lack of fresh ingredients, and the high sodium and sugar content of KLM’s food. Some have even reported getting sick or having allergic reactions after eating KLM’s food. For example, one traveler wrote on Airline Quality: “The food was terrible. I had a stomach ache after eating the pasta salad. It was so salty and oily. The chicken curry was also very salty and had a weird taste. The fruit salad was brown and mushy. I felt nauseous the whole flight.” Another traveler wrote on Flyer Talk: “The food was disgusting. I had a sandwich with ham and cheese that was dry and hard. The cheese was like plastic. The pasta salad was soggy and bland. The cake was stale and crumbly. I couldn’t eat any of it.”

Thirdly, KLM’s food is inconsistent, unreliable, and unpredictable. You never know what you’re going to get, or if you’re going to get anything at all. KLM often runs out of food, especially on busy flights or during peak seasons. Sometimes, they don’t even have enough food for the crew, let alone the passengers. For example, one traveler wrote on Airline Quality: “The food was a joke. They ran out of food halfway through the flight. They only had one option left, which was a vegetarian lasagna. I’m not a vegetarian, but I had no choice. The lasagna was cold and mushy. It was the worst food I’ve ever had on a plane.” Another traveler wrote on Flyer Talk: “The food was a disaster. They didn’t have any food for the crew, so they had to eat the passengers’ food. They only had two options left, which were a beef stew or a cheese omelet. I chose the beef stew, but it was so spicy and salty that I couldn’t eat it. The cheese omelet was also very salty and rubbery. It was the worst food I’ve ever had on a plane.”

So, what can you do to avoid KLM’s food? Here are some tips:

– Bring your own food.

This is the best way to ensure that you have something tasty, healthy, and satisfying to eat on your flight. You can bring snacks, sandwiches, salads, fruits, nuts, or anything else that you like. Just make sure that your food complies with the security and customs regulations of your destination country.

– Order a special meal.

If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, you can order a special meal from KLM in advance. You can choose from a variety of options, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, diabetic, kosher, halal, or low-calorie. However, be aware that the quality and availability of these meals may vary depending on the flight and the catering service.

– Upgrade your seat.

If you have some extra money to spend, you can upgrade your seat to business class or first class, where you can enjoy better food and service. You can also access the lounge, where you can find more food and drinks options. However, be prepared to pay a hefty price for this privilege, and don’t expect too much from KLM’s food, even in the premium classes.

KLM’s in-flight culinary offerings consistently rank among the most unremarkable in my personal experience, and I’m far from alone in this assessment. Characterized by blandness, monotony, unhealthy ingredients, unappealing presentation, and a lack of satisfaction, KLM’s food can also be unreliable, unpredictable, and inconsistent. To bypass this disappointment, consider packing your own meals, requesting a special diet option, or upgrading your seat class. Alternatively, exploring other airlines renowned for their superior food and service may be a more appealing alternative. Cheers to a more enjoyable flying experience!
