The Hefty New BMW M5: A Glimpse into the Future of High-Performance Hybrids

The automotive industry is discussing the latest exclusive report on the upcoming BMW M5, codenamed G90. According to a reliable insider on the Bimmer Post forum, the new generation of this iconic supercar will inherit XM’s plug-in hybrid V8 configuration, with a maximum output of 718 horsepower. But there is a problem that has caused quite a stir: according to reports, the weight of the new M5 is as high as 5368 pounds. This is 453 kilograms (998 pounds) heavier than its predecessor F90.

The Challenges of Weight in the New M5

The question in the hearts of every enthusiast is, ‘Why does weight gain significantly?’ The answer lies in strict emission regulations, especially in the European Union, which are driving car manufacturers towards electrification. The powertrain of the new M5 consists of a twin turbo 4.4-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor, which is a response to these environmental requirements. The total output is impressive, but it adds most of the lithium-ion battery pack, with a usable energy of 18.6 kWh.

Despite these concerns, it is worth noting that the M5 will still be 606 pounds (275 kilograms) lighter than the XM and only 287 pounds (130 kilograms) heavier than the dual motor electric vehicle i5 M60. The size of the upcoming M5 will also increase, measuring 1.4 inches (36 millimeters) longer and 2.7 inches (70 millimeters) wider than the standard 5 Series sedan.

Insiders also revealed that the M5 will be equipped with 20 inch wheels at the front and 21 inch wheels at the rear, and an update in early 2027 will introduce a panoramic visual head up display. The production plan for this sedan is scheduled to start in July and November of this year, with both models expected to be produced until February 2031.

The Promise and Potential of the New M5

The weight of the new M5 is indeed worrying, as heavier vehicles have higher requirements for suspension, tires, powertrain, and brakes, not to mention accelerated wear and tear. However, BMW has a car history of balancing performance and luxury, and the M5 has always been a model of this spirit.

Although the rumored weight of the M5 may draw attention, it is important to remember that electrification is the direction forward, which comes with the challenge of managing additional quality. The plug-in hybrid system of the next generation M5 proves BMW’s commitment to performance and sustainability. This is a balance between driving pleasure and environmental responsibility, and BMW seems ready to prove that the two can coexist.

In short, although the weight of the new M5 may be a topic, the driving experience ultimately determines this car. BMW rarely disappoints in providing cars that are both comfortable to drive and comfortable for daily use. The M5 G90 may follow in the footsteps of XM in terms of powertrain, but what determines its success is the driving experience. So, before making a judgment, let’s wait and see the operation of this sedan. After all, BMW has some knowledge of making interesting and luxurious commuting appliances that can inspire the soul of any car enthusiast.
