Honda Accord’s Tech Upgrade: Wireless Apple CarPlay for 2018-2022 Models

Keeping up with the latest technological advancements can be difficult in a world where innovation appears quickly, particularly for auto owners. However, Honda is going to change the game for its customers. Honda revealed the wonderful news that Accord owners would be happy to hear at a media meeting earlier this year: wireless Apple CarPlay will be available for 2018–2022 Accord sedans. This upgrade is a part of Honda’s effort to maintain the technological relevance and modernity of its cars for as long as possible.

Honda Accord continues to make progress.

The process of bringing this feature to life is straightforward—a simple software update. However, because the older Accord models do not have built-in mobile data connections, owners will need to schedule a service appointment at a Honda dealership to receive this upgrade. Honda is expected to launch a web portal by the end of January, where customers can conveniently schedule their service appointments.

While some of the 2021 and 2022 Accords already support wireless phone projection, this retrofitting move is quite unusual in the automotive industry. It’s not every day that a car manufacturer retrofits older models with new technology, especially when it was not included at launch. This initiative put forward by Honda is a testament to their dedication to customer satisfaction and their foresight in adapting to the developing needs of drivers.

An introduction of Apple CarPlay

Apple CarPlay was first showcased on a 2014 Volvo prototype, designed to provide a safer and more convenient way to access phone features through the car’s infotainment system. With its large icons, voice search, and text-reading capabilities, CarPlay is not only a safety feature but also a means of integrating Apple’s ecosystem into more aspects of iPhone users’ lives. The fact that Apple offered CarPlay to automakers for free was likely to contribute to its widespread adoption.

Initially, CarPlay was a feature reserved for high-end models and trims, such as the Acura NSX and larger Honda models like the CR-V, Pilot, and Ridgeline. The 2018-2022 Honda Accords required a physical connection to use CarPlay, but with this update, the cords can be eliminated, offering a seamless and modern driving experience.

The question now is whether Accord owners will find the wireless feature compelling enough to visit their dealership for an upgrade. If the response is positive, it could pave the way for similar updates across other Honda and Acura models.

In the meantime, online forums are buzzing with discussions among Honda enthusiasts who have already taken the DIY route to upgrade their infotainment systems. From finding the right model numbers to sharing installation tips and unlocking codes, the community is actively engaging in enhancing their vehicles’ tech capabilities.

Honda has taken a risk by adding wireless  Apple  CarPlay to earlier Accords, making their cars more  future-proof and improving the whole ownership experience. It’s an unmistakable indication that Honda cherishes its customers and is prepared to make ongoing investments. One thing is certain as we wait for further information about the program: a bit more connectivity is on the way.
