How to Avoid Rental Car Rip-Offs and Save Money on Your Next Trip
If you’re planning to rent a vehicle for your next trip, you should really reconsider before you sign the rental agreement and drive away. You might be in for an unpleasant surprise when you return the vehicle and find out that you’ve been charged for damages that you didn’t cause, or that you’ve overpaid for insurance or fees.
To avoid these common rental car scams and save money on your next trip, follow these tips and tricks that we’ve gathered from experts.
Always take a video of your rental car when you pick it up. This is the best way to document the condition of the car and avoid being blamed for any scratches, dents, or stains that were already there. Use your smartphone to record a walk-around video of the exterior and interior of the car, and make sure to capture the license plate, odometer, and fuel level. You can also take photos of any existing damage and email them to yourself or the rental company as proof. When you return the car, do the same thing and compare the videos to see if anything has changed. If you notice any new damage, report it to the rental company immediately and show them your video evidence.
Don’t buy insurance that you don’t need. Many rental car companies will try to sell you extra insurance coverage that you may already have through your own auto insurance policy or credit card. Before you rent a car, check with your insurance provider and credit card company to see what kind of coverage they offer for rental cars. You may find that you’re already covered for collision damage, theft, liability, and personal injury. If that’s the case, you can decline the rental company’s insurance and save yourself some money. However, be aware that some countries may require you to buy local insurance, and some credit cards may not cover certain types of vehicles or situations. Always read the fine print and know what you’re getting into before you decline any insurance.
Avoid unnecessary fees and charges. Rental car companies may charge you extra for things like fuel, tolls, GPS, child seats, or additional drivers. To avoid these fees, you can do the following:
- Refill the fuel tank before you return the car. Most rental companies will charge you a premium price for refueling the car if you don’t return it with the same amount of gas that it had when you picked it up. To avoid this, find a nearby gas station and refill the tank yourself before you drop off the car. Make sure to keep the receipt as proof.
- Use your own toll transponder or pay cash. Some rental companies will charge you a daily fee for using their toll transponder, even if you don’t use any toll roads. To avoid this, you can use your own toll transponder if you have one, or pay cash at the toll gates. If you do use the rental company’s transponder, make sure to check the bill and dispute any charges that are incorrect or excessive.
- Bring your own GPS, child seat, or additional driver. Rental companies will charge you extra for renting a GPS device, a child seat, or adding an additional driver to the rental agreement. To avoid these charges, you can bring your own GPS device or use your smartphone’s navigation app, bring your own child seat or rent one from a third-party provider, or limit the number of drivers to one or two. If you do need to add an additional driver, make sure they meet the rental company’s age and license requirements, and check if they’re covered by your insurance or credit card.
By following these tips and tricks, you can avoid rental car scams and save money on your next trip. Remember to always read the rental agreement carefully, inspect the car when you pick it up and return it, and document everything with videos, photos, and receipts. Happy travels!
