PS5 Players Love Single-Player Games More Than Ever, Leaked Documents Reveal
Since its release in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 has sold over 13.4 million units globally, shattering previous records for Sony. However, what games do PS5 owners really play on their gleaming new systems? Vice was able to secure secret documents that show that single-player games make up the majority of the response.
The records, which were a part of a significant data breach at Sony earlier this year, demonstrate that throughout the first half of the PS5’s existence, gamers spent more time playing single-player games than multiplayer ones. Between November 2020 and May 2021, both physical and digital games are included in the data set.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, FIFA 21, and NBA 2K21 were the top five PS5 games played during this time. Only FIFA and Call of Duty are primarily multiplayer games; the other titles include a single-player experience as well. For four of those six months, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the much anticipated follow-up to 2018’s Spider-Man game, was the most played PS5 title.
Additionally, the paper reveals that PS5 users play games on their systems for an average of 2.3 hours every day, which is somewhat greater than the 2.1 hours that PS4 users play. On the other hand, PS5 users watched less video material on their consoles than PS4 users did—on average, 0.7 hours against 1.3 hours per day for PS4 users.
Sony becomes the winner
According to the leaked data, PS5 owners appear to choose single-player games over multiplayer ones, indicating that Sony’s policy of investing in high-quality single-player games is paying off. Some of the greatest single-player video games available today, including God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, Spirit of Tsushima, and Mystic Seas, are known to have been made by Sony. The business has also bought a number of single-player game development studios, including Spider-Man creator Insomniac Games, Return of the Souls developer Housemarque, and Demon’s Souls remake developer Bluepoint Games.
The next PS5 game portfolio from Sony, which features titles like Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Chronicles, Sportscar Romance Tour 7, and Final Fantasy XVI, also reflects the company’s emphasis on single-player gameplay. These titles are anticipated to be the most popular ones on the system, which might draw more players into the PS5 universe.
Other multiplayer games on PS5
Naturally, this does not imply that multiplayer on the PS5 is obsolete or unwelcome. Millions of people still routinely play titles like Call of Duty, FIFA, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Warzone, and Apex Legends on the platform. Additionally, Sony revealed a handful of PS5 multiplayer titles, including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Destruction AllStars. Furthermore, Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade are just a few of the time-limited or exclusive multiplayer games that Sony has brought to the PS5 in collaboration with other outside studios.
Nonetheless, it’s evident that PS5 players have a particular place in their hearts for single-player games, since they are prepared to invest more time and money in them than in multiplayer ones. This is encouraging for Sony and the gaming community at large as it demonstrates the continued high desire for compelling single-player experiences that highlight the capabilities and performance of the PS5 system.
